Although you may have cabinets that you are not too fond of, and you are unable to get brand new ones, a solution may be to update your cabinets by painting them and giving them a new look.
It can be tiring to paint anything, including cabinets and it is easier to just hire a professional to do the job for you. With that being said, if you are into small house projects and want to save a few dollars, you can just do it on your own.
Using a paint brush and a small roller may be the best way to paint kitchen cabinets. Spray painting is another option which can be faster, but also more difficult for some. The following steps can be used for both spray painting and regular paint.
Before getting started with paint, you must begin by clearing your counter tops, emptying your cabinets and covering all appliances and the backsplash. The doors, drawers, hinges and all other hardware should also be removed from the cabinets. Having a worktable can be very useful while completing this task however, if you do not have one you can also just use 2x4 boards propped onto buckets and boxes. If neither of those options work for you, working on top of a drop cloth will also, do just fine.
To make sure all the paint will stay on, it is important to properly prep all doors and drawers. Cleaning and scrubbing the cabinets to get rid of any dirt, grease or residue is how you begin this process. If new hardware is going to be used, make sure to cover all holes with wood filler. Then, to get all of your surfaces smooth you can use 100-grit sand paper. Before drilling any new holes, don’t forget to wipe away all remaining dust with a tack cloth. Caulk can also be used to fill the gaps or seams to get a nice finish.
Priming the boxes, drawers and door fronts before starting the painting will give more of a professional style finish. When the primer is done drying, a foam roller and angled brush can be used for the painting. Latex satin is also used and works well on kitchen cabinets and can be easier to work with than oil paint. Work in sections and do your first coat with an angled brush then, go over your work with the roller for a near perfect finish. After painting, fine grit sandpaper can be used and to get more durability, a coat of satin polycyclic will be helpful. Wait until the paint is finished drying before reinstalling the doors, drawers and installing the hardware you previously removed.
Another way to paint your cabinets is by spray painting them. Spray painting would be best done outside or in a controlled area so that you do not have to worry about making a mess with overspray. All the steps listed also apply to spray painting the only difference is that instead of using a roller and paintbrush you would be using a can of spray paint.
